Each nesting season, sea turtles return to the same beaches where they hatched to lay their eggs — and those beaches must remain dark for both nesting mothers and hatchlings to safely complete their journeys. Unfortunately, artificial lights from beachfront homes, businesses, streetlights, flashlights, and even cell phones can disorient hatchlings, causing them to head inland instead of toward the water. This often leads them toward roads, predators, storm drains, or death from exhaustion and dehydration.

Even adult females may avoid brightly lit beaches altogether, leading to fewer nesting attempts and decreased reproductive success — a significant concern for already threatened and endangered species.
